The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) counted 677,243 people who fled the violent fighting between Russian troops and the Ukrainian army on Tuesday afternoon.

The Poland, who has taken up the cause of Ukraine, has received by far the largest number of refugees since the start of the Russian invasion. In total, they were 377,400, according to the UNHCR count, more than 100,000 more than in Monday’s count. Poland was already home to around 1.5 million Ukrainians, most of whom had come to work in this European Union member country.

The Hungary hosted 89,561 refugees, according to the UNHCR tally. The country has five border posts with Ukraine and several border towns, such as Zahony, have converted public buildings into relief centers, where Hungarian civilians come to offer food or assistance.

The number of refugees jumped in Moldovarising to 65,391 from less than 40,000 on Monday.

Some 54,304 people fled Ukraine and took refuge in Slovakiamore than 24,000 more than on Monday, according to the UNHCR.

There were 38,461 refugees who arrived in Romaniaaccording to the UNHCR, which represents an increase of just under 4,000 people compared to the previous day.

The UNHCR also specified that 51,797 of these refugees had continued on their way, once the Ukrainian border had been crossed, towards other European countries.
