Seventy-three years later, we are no longer asking whether machines can mimic human creativity. We are watching them surpass it—in seconds, not lifetimes—and then redesign themselves to do it better. The threat is not that AI will become evil. It is that it may become too good at being indifferent.

This represents the quiet crisis beneath the noise: AI systems are no longer tools we wield. The solution is not to halt progress. It is to demand that progress serve humanity—not the other way around. That means:

  • Public funding for independent AI red teams, tasked with probing systems for emergent behaviors before deployment, not after.

  • And perhaps most urgently, a cultural shift: we must stop treating AI as oracle or inevitability and start seeing it as what it is—a mirror. It reflects our values, our blind spots, our hunger for control. If we dislike what we see, the fault is not in the glass.

Rollo the robot walked away from the piano because he understood something we are still learning: mastery without meaning is a kind of violence. The question is not whether AI will surpass us. It is whether we will remember why that matters.
