Book presentation and Ö1 Artist Talk with Stella Rollig, Wolfgang Ullrich, Margot Pilz, Jojo Gronostay and Christine Scheucher on September 25th

Vienna (OTS) In 2023, the Belvedere will celebrate its 300th anniversary and look to the future. A comprehensive publication and a public discussion on September 25th will shed light on the changes in the concept of museum over three centuries: How does the museum have to change in order to remain relevant?

Director General Stella Rollig: In our current museum work, in addition to the traditional tasks, we are particularly concerned with the topics of inclusion, accessibility, diversity, sustainability and digital transformation. The anniversary year invites us to reflect on the past and design the museum of tomorrow.

Ö1 Artist Talk The context makes the art! 300 years of Belvedere

On September 25th from 6:30 p.m., Ö1 editor and presenter Christine Scheucher and Belvedere General Director Stella Rollig invite the cultural scientist and author Wolfgang Ullrich as well as the artists Margot Pilz and Jojo Gronostay to the Artist Talk in the Lower Belvedere. On the occasion of the anniversary year, the eventful history of the house as one of the first public museums in Europe and the tasks and challenges that the Belvedere has to overcome today and in the future will be discussed. Because the Temple of the Muses of old no longer has anything to do with the museum of today. The museum of the 21st century is an educational institution and tourism magnet, a stage for political action and a meeting place for an increasingly diverse community.

As part of the Ö1 Artist Talk, the anniversary publication published by De Gruyter Wissenschaftsverlag The Belvedere. 300 years of art presents.

publication The Belvedere. 300 years of art

In the exhibition The Belvedere. 300 years of art, which can be seen in the Orangery until February 25, 2024, the house deals with its own history as a museum and its changing use. The research volume The Belvedere. 300 years of art is not a catalog for the exhibition, but rather an independent publication for the anniversary year. Contributions from 33 authors from the international scientific community tell the history of the museum’s use of the Belvedere in a differentiated and well-founded manner and explore common questions across epochs: Which organizational concepts manifest themselves in the art presentations? How contemporary were these in international comparison? Which audience should it address? General Director Stella Rollig and Christian Huemer, head of the Belvedere Research Center, are responsible for publishing the volume. With the design of the almost 400 pages with almost 300 illustrations between gold-embossed book covers, the graphic designer Marie Artaker created an example of contemporary book art.

We do not see the volume as a commemorative publication, but rather as a critical homage. We were interested in what questions we can ask about the past that are relevant today – in keeping with the Belvedere’s motto ‘A museum that matters’, which focuses on democratization, participation and inclusionsays Christian Huemer.
