“The best medicine is prevention”

MADRID, 10 (EUROPA PRESS)

Dr. María Reyes García de la Fuente, dermatologist at Vithas Lleida, recalled that, although there is a genetic predisposition, the risk factor for skin cancer is photoexposure, which is why she maintained that “the best medicine is prevention” .

The expert has expressed this recommendation on the occasion of World Skin Cancer Day, which is celebrated this Monday, June 13, and has added that, during the summer period, “it is time to protect oneself with all available means”, such as covering oneself with clothes that provide good sun protection. “Dark colors and dense fabrics offer more protection from the sun than light clothing and fine fabrics,” she added.

Likewise, the Vithas Lleida Medical Center will carry out a training action throughout Monday, June 13. Members of the health staff will receive all patients with an explanation on skin cancer prevention, will give them a sample of sun protection cream and will encourage them to make an appointment with their dermatology specialist to check the condition of their skin.

To protect yourself from the sun, García de la Fuente has also recommended the use of suitable photoprotectors for each skin type, with a high UVB index and incorporating a UVA filter. Therefore, it is convenient to use creams that incorporate the UVA filter even if we are inside the car or next to a window.

For the eyes, the expert appeals for the use of sunglasses due to their high sensitivity to ultraviolet radiation. Finally, she advises proper hydration and avoiding sun exposure in the middle of the day, since UVB radiation is maximum between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.
