“The button can be placed under clothing”: this new tool will help victims in the event of aggression, here’s how

A mobile alarm against harassment and intra-family violence is born. This system, used up to now in Flanders, is now available in Brussels. It is actually a button that victims can press, in the event of an attack, to alert the police.

Training in the management of intra-family violence for police officers and the Brussels public prosecutor’s office this Wednesday morning. They will soon be helped in their interventions by a mobile alarm against harassment. “The button can be placed under the victim’s clothing. When she pushes the button, the 112 application is activated. And her location is transmitted directly to the emergency services”explain Riet Verstraeten, Chief Inspector of the Domestic Violence Unit.

The alarm allows the victim to contact the police without having to use their phone. “It can’t work if the attacker tries to pick up the phone or if the victim hangs up quickly because we don’t have time to locate them. With correct and fast information, teams can quickly get to the scene and solve problems”poursuit l’ichief nspector of the cell.

The Brussels-Ixelles police zone monitors 10 cases of domestic violence every day. “There is what emerges from the first intervention, but we always have a second reading of the file by a specialized team. And this team sees with the public prosecutor what follow-up to the case”noted Michel Goovaerts, head of the Brussels-Capital-Ixelles police zone.

Used in Ghent since 2019, the alarm has enabled the police to save around thirty victims from mortal danger.
