‘The Callisto Protocol’ cut ‘PUBG’ link due to narrative ‘difficulty’

The notion of The Callisto Protocol et PUBG: Battlegrounds to take place in a shared universe was scrapped because Striking Distance, the developers of the former, felt that tying the two games together was too “difficult”.

Upcoming horror shooter The Callisto Protocol was originally set to take place in the shared universe of PUBG Battlegrounds as both games are published by Krafton. However, after Striking Distance asked to remove the PUBG Battlegrounds connection of the game, Krafton allowed them to do so.

As reported by PCGN, the original plan to link the two games would have involved a gap of 400 years between the events of the two stories. Striking Distance CTO Mark James said “the connection would have been taken away from the Callisto universe” and as a result they decided not to pursue it.

Game director Glen Schofield has previously said that in trying to connect the stories of PUBG et The Callisto Protocol, Striking Distance realized the concept was “a bit out there” and dropped it as a result. Schofield also shared that his next game will still reference PUBG through Easter eggs.

Striking Distance has expressed interest in making a Protocole Callisto franchise with the studio’s creative director saying they would “love” to see the series expand after the first game is released. That being said, the studio is only focused on making the game for now.

The Callisto Protocol is often referred to as the spiritual successor of dead space. It is both because of dead space the direction of the game from creator Glen Schofield and also because of the great similarities that can be observed between the two games.

The Callisto Protocol will be released on December 2 on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and PC.
