The Capulets and the Montecchi: Bellini’s Concert Performance at Salzburg Festival

Salzburg (MH) – Can Bellini be performed in concert? One can – and should do it much more often – take the audience’s enthusiasm seriously at the first of two “I Capuleti e I Montecchi” performances at the Salzburg Festival.

“The Capulets and the Montecchi” concert

Vincenzo Bellini’s version of the Romeo and Juliet story, which is extremely brittle from the title, was brought to the stage of the Felsenreitschule by the ensemble around the Mozarteum Orchestra and the gentlemen of the Philharmonia Chor Wien under Marco Armiliato on Saturday with maximum snappy, musical, but also with elegance. The orchestral soloists, who are given delicate tasks in some arias, are also particularly confident. In order to bring a certain movement into the action, the singers came from the background in front of the orchestra and then stood behind Armiliato, which sometimes spoiled the musical fine-tuning.

In the ensemble of singers, Aigul Akhmetshina made the strongest impression in the role of Romeo pants. A phenomenally led mezzo-soprano with plaintively beautiful depth, radiant height and great mezzo-voce culture, who made the final dying scene a moment of goosebumps. On the other hand, the vocal culture of Elsa Dreisig is a little more unbalanced than that of Giulietta. She manages magically light shades, but after longer phrases the soprano always seems strained and not sure of the intonation. Overall, both are a dream team.

The men are also top cast: Michele Pertusi as Capellio, Giovanni Sala as Tebaldo and Roberto Tagliavini as Lorenzo are all convincing and beautifully voiced, each with their own character. So: Salzburg celebrates the finest bel canto with standing ovations.
