The announcement of the closure of the Center Pompidou in Paris is a thunderclap in the art world. Already dormant for weeks due to the Covid-19 epidemic, the institution will remain closed from 2023 to 2027 for three long years. And for good reason, this symbol of avant-garde and modernity is today an old, tired and rusty liner. Even its famous colorful pipes are at their end. On its facades, asbestos is everywhere.
This generalized dilapidation can be seen even in the bowels of the building. “We can also see it in relation to the pigeons, which degrade the original electrical cabinets, and the whole structure is corroded”, explains Jean-Robert Lefèvre, director of building and security at the center. Inaugurated in 1977, the building was designed according to the energy standards of the time. Suffice to say that it is not really a model of ecology. Three years of closure and 200 million euros are therefore necessary to bring it up to standard.
