the charging box will soon switch to USB-C

According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple should switch its AirPods headphones to USB-C from 2023. A problem for the brand’s next high-end headphones.

Since European Union decision to make it compulsory to carry a load USB-C, Apple’s transition to this standard connector occupies a lot of mind. Of course, the big question discusses iPhone’s switch to USB-Cbut it’s not the only Apple product to still use the Lightning port.

Apple still markets a lot of accessories charging in Lightning like the Magic Mouse, the Magic Keyboard, or the AirPods headphones. Apple’s wireless headphones are arguably Apple’s most popular product after the iPhone to still use this connector.

Like the iPhone, the transition could begin as early as 2023.

A new charging case for AirPods

It is the analyst Ming-Chi Kuo who delivers this prediction:I predict Apple will release USB-C compatible charging cases for all AirPods models in 2023“. Please note, the analyst is not talking about a new generation of headphones, but simply a new charging box. They may be offered as an option for purchase, without any change in design or functions for the headphones.

In 2019, for the launch of AirPods 2, Apple had a similar choice by offering the wireless charging compatible charging case as an option for first-generation AirPods owners. Ming-Chi Kuo makes it clear that all AirPods models will be affected in 2023. A new case will therefore also be needed for the AirPods Pro headphones.

The analyst does not mention the AirPods Max headphones in his tweet. Apple’s high-end headphones of 2020 could also find a new version in 2023 with USB-C charging.

Quid des AirPods Pro 2 ?

In the same tweet, Ming-Chi Kuo indicates that “however, the charging case for the new AirPods Pro 2 launched in 2:22 a.m. might still support Lightning“. We could therefore see a first generation of AirPods Pro 2 launched at the end of 2022 with only a Lightning charging box, then a new option in 2023 with the USB-C charging box.

The analyst does not indicate when this transition could begin. We can assume that Apple would wait until the end of 2023 and the launch of the iPhone 15 to begin a general change of its entire product line to USB-C. However, the brand had chosen to launch the 2nd generation in the spring and not at the end of the year.

This switch would be a logical choice on the part of Apple. The firm no longer has any interest in keeping its Lightning port in its products if the iPhone abandons it. She was also able to experience such a transition on the iPad range, including the latest model could adopt USB-C as soon as this year.
