BMW unveiled the BMW iX Flow concept car, which can change exterior color, at CES 2022, the world’s largest consumer electronics and information technology (IT) exhibition, opened in Las Vegas, USA on the 5th (local time). A demonstration video of the car changing color in front of your eyes has spread online and is attracting attention.
If you watch the iX Flow color change demonstration video, the exterior color changes as a whole from the front part to the rear part. However, the grill and wheel colors are excluded.
The secret is electronic ink technology. Precisely tailored to the contours of the vehicle, the wrapping contains millions of microcapsules containing special pigments. When color change is selected, the color is changed by the principle that the pigment collects on the surface of the capsule as stimulation by an electric field occurs.
E-ink technology does not consume electricity to maintain the changed color. On the contrary, the company explained that the difference in heat energy absorption according to the color increases the thermal efficiency of the vehicle.
