The Conservatives’ defeat deepens with Sadiq Khan’s victory as mayor of London

The results showed that the Labor Party won more than 180 seats and the presidency of 8 additional local councils, while the Conservatives lost about 470 seats and at least 10 local councils.

In a speech he delivered after the results were announced, Khan said he was proud of his victory, adding that he hoped this year would be a year of great change with a Labor government.

According to observers, the significant gains achieved by the labor opposition enhance the chances of its leader, Keir Starmer, assuming the presidency of the government after the legislative elections scheduled to be held later this year.

Starmer said on Saturday as he celebrated the election of Labor mayor Claire Ward: Today we celebrate turning a page and opening a new one, which is one of the last steps before the legislative elections.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, who seeks to unite conservative ranks, for his part, defended his policy on Saturday, especially those related to his plan to deport immigrants to Rwanda and reduce taxes.

On the other hand, observers believe that the Labor Party has lost broad support from its supporters because of its position, which some consider supportive of Israel in its war on Gaza.

Opinion research specialist John Curtis considered in an analysis for the “I” newspaper that the party benefited from the desire of a wide segment of voters to defeat the Conservatives, and not to support the workers.
