“The longer we wait, the greater the stigma.” Queen Rania recalls King Hussein’s advice on peace

Jordan – Queen Rania Al Abdullah called on the international community to put pressure on Israel to stop the collective punishment to which the people of Gaza are subjected, recalling advice from the late King Hussein of Jordan.

Queen Rania said, during an interview on the American channel MSNBC, “The international community must use its influence, and this means that it must be prepared to hold both parties accountable.” Achieving a just peace cannot be limited only to the stronger side applying its will to the weaker side, which means that the imbalance of power here must be understood.”

The Queen recalled the advice of her father-in-law, the late King Hussein, who signed a peace agreement with Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin in 1994. She said: “He was the one who once told me: ‘Rania, you must always put yourself in the other person’s place.’” I never forgot these words. A simple request but one people rarely do these days. This is the gateway to empathy.”

She added: All I want is for everyone to try, for once, to put themselves in the place of the Palestinians.

Commenting on the ruling issued by the International Court of Justice in January, which deemed it plausible that Israel would commit genocide against the Palestinians, Queen Rania noted, “It may take years for the court to issue its final ruling, and it cannot wait because people are being killed today.” History is being written today. And everyone is already too late. “The longer we wait, the greater the stain on the global conscience.”

Queen Rania called on the international community to urgently put pressure on Israel to stop the collective punishment to which the people of Gaza are subjected, and to stop its violations against the Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

She said, “When starvation is used as a weapon of war, this is collective punishment, and this is a war crime.” When an entire population is displaced, this is a war crime, noting that “it is very clear that Israel has no problem targeting civilians, and that they underestimate the value of Palestinian lives.”
