The total contribution of the digital economy in Côte d’Ivoire could amount to more than 20 billion dollars by 2050, or 10% of GDP, indicates the 12th report of the World Bank on the economic situation of the country, presented Wednesday in Abidjan.

According to Hermann Djedje Yohou, an economist at the bank and author of this document, “the economy of Côte d’Ivoire is doing well. The outlook despite the headwinds remains favourable. However, given the country’s ambitions, it needs an additional instrument: digital technology can help”.

It certifies that currently, the sector of the digital economy has generated 3000 direct jobs and 5.5 billion dollars as a total contribution in the economy equivalent to 3% of the GDP.

The author also acknowledges the efforts made by the Ivorian government which resulted in growth of 7% in 2021, despite inflation of 4.5% due to the increase in domestic demand combined with the climatic shock and disruptions in the economy. national offer.

“The increase in imports is mainly driven by capital goods, for investment needs, and by consumer goods… The BCEAO’s external reserves have reached comfortable levels thanks to strong capital inflows”, said Hermann Djedje Yohou.

The Ivorian Minister of Economy and Finance, Adama Coulibaly, hailed the quality of the report from the Bretton Wood institution, which shows that the Ivorian economy is dynamic and has fundamentals.
He wanted to reaffirm the work initiated by the government in reducing the poverty rate which, he said, has gone from 55% in 2012 to 39% currently.

Beyond that, with the new “vision 2030” development program, the government intends to reduce the poverty rate by 20%.

On productivity, the Minister recognizes that there are efforts to be made, indicating that measures have been taken to increase productivity in all sectors, particularly agricultural and industrial.
