Interim President Ranil Wickremesinghe says fascist forces threaten Sri Lankan democracy. He said that peace will be restored in the country at any cost and strict action will be taken against those who destroy public property. Wickramasinghe announced on television that he was declaring a state of emergency in the country.’ Protesters should vacate the offices and official residences of the President and Prime Minister. “Some politicians are also supporting these terrorists,” Wickramasinghe alleged.

Wickremesinghe must step down: Opposition

In the all-party meeting, the main opposition parties demanded that Wickremesinghe step down as Prime Minister and hand over the administration to the Speaker. Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa said Wickramasinghe, as interim president, had no authority to declare emergency. Meanwhile, Wickremesinghe has asked Parliament Speaker Mahinda Abeywardhana to suggest a prime ministerial candidate acceptable to the opposition.
