Senegal has recorded its first death linked to Crimean Congo hemorrhagic fever. The patient was treated at the Dalal Jam hospital in Guédiawaye.

The deceased patient is a butcher, contaminated between Dakar, Diourbel and Kaffrine by Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever.

The victim, aged 35, is male and lives in Cité Fadia in the commune of Guédiawaye, reports sources from OBS.

The patient died on Saturday April 22, Korité day. The butcher who slaughtered cattle and sheep whose meat he sold, followed a route that took him between the Dakar region, in particular his district of Cité Fadia, and the departments of Diourbel and Kaffrine.

He began to develop the first symptoms on April 10. It is first fever and demonstrations that resembled the flu. Taken to the emergency department of Dalal Jam hospital, samples were taken from him on April 20.

The first suspicions of a viral haemorrhagic fever were confirmed after he had developed a haemorrhagic syndrome and thrombocytopenia (decreased number of platelets in the blood, editor’s note).

Despite adequate care for his case, the butcher did not survive the heavy bleeding and died two days later, prompting the immediate implementation of a battery of public health measures.
