The elections of professors at the National University of La Plata (UNLP) end today and with that the leadership in most of the 17 faculties is defined. With the exception of Medicine (where there is a unit list) and Agrarian (scene of one of the four teaching disputes), in which the suspense could stretch until the end of the month, when the students vote.
The teaching faculty defines seven (five for the majority and two for the minority that obtains 25 of the votes) of the 16 seats that each board of directors has. In this sense, the officialdoms of Law, Economics, Architecture, Arts, Economics, Veterinary, Humanities, Computer Science, Engineering, Dentistry, Journalism, Psychology, Social Work and Medicine have already secured an absolute majority, which are presented with a single list and without competition. opposition in the teaching staff. In addition to the seven professors, the management of (almost) all these faculties already has three graduates (who voted last week) and the non-teacher (who will go to the polls next week), which would ensure the 11 votes necessary to reelect (or the 9 enough to designate a dean of the same political color).
Within that group, a separate paragraph deserves Medicine. Firstly because, as it transpired, from different sectors critical of the management, they called on the teaching staff to vote blank as a way of making visible their opposition to the unity list promoted by the Dean’s Office. To take dimension of the impact that this message may have -in a register that is around 160 teachers- we will have to wait for the scrutiny this afternoon. The future is also uncertain in Medicine because the ruling party that responds to dean Juan Ángel Basualdo Farjat has just lost the head of practical work (JTP) at the hands of the radical opposition that gave the bump in the graduate elections by keeping the three councilors at stake (even with the JTP to which the ruling party clung). With which the management of 60 and 120 would have so far 7 professors and the non-teacher: 8 votes (of the 11 that Basualdo needs in the Board of Directors to be re-elected or of the 9 that he would need in case of proposing a successor) . So the key to leading Medicine would at this time be in the hands of the students, a faculty that at the end of the month will define 5 directors (4 of them today belong to Remediar -JUP-, which also leads the Center, and the remaining is from the front that makes up the PCR and Patria Grande).
Attached to the faculty of 60 and 120, one of the hardest-fought teaching disputes will take place in Agrarias, where the “Consensus” list (aligned with Dean Ricardo Andreu, who would run for re-election) faces “Convergence” (which promotes ex-deans and referents linked to the traditional government of Agrarias). Of the 11 votes that he needs to be re-elected, Andreu has 3 (the non-teacher and two graduates, since he lost the JTP with another payroll linked to La Cámpora). The election of teachers is so hotly contested here that until last night no one dared to risk a result and there were those who believed that the suspense for driving in Agrarias could extend to the student election.
While it will also be necessary to closely monitor the scrutiny in Naturales, Exactas and the Observatory, where the lists linked to the officialdom come from adding three counselors in Graduates but they will have to overcome the opposition competition in professors. If there are no surprises and they achieve the majority in the teaching staff, the efforts of these three faculties could ensure, at least, the continuity at the head of the Deanship.
