Almost everywhere in the world, people are starting to turn to renewable energy sources. In Chinethe company Three Gorges Corporation has just achieved an important milestone in the sector of wind turbines. She comes to install and connect the largest wind turbine in the world. This is a wind turbine 16 megawatts having a diameter of 260 m. It is expected to supply clean energy to approximately 36,000 households.

The wind turbine in question is called MingYang Smart Energy MySE 16-260. It is the largest wind turbine ever connected to a power grid. According to information, the central part containing the generator weighs in the 349 tons, and each blade has a mass of 49 tons. The wind turbine is mounted on a 152 m foot and each of the blades measures 123 m.

A revolution carried out by this gigantic wind turbine sends about 34.2 kWh of energy to the Chinese power grid. The MySE 16-260 is expected to generate 66 gigawatt-hours of electricity per year.

A resistance test

The giant wind turbine is the first MySE 16-260 to be connected to the grid. She was installed in the Fujian Offshore Wind Farm that can be found in the Taiwan Straitand will be able to benefit from a natural wind tunnel effect.

According to the Three Gorges Group, the location where the device is located undergoes level 7 conditions with some winds exceeding 51 km/h and this for 200 days. The site is also frequently affected by typhoons. This will thus be an opportunity for the wind turbine to test its resistance, knowing that it was designed to withstand winds with a speed of up to 287 km/h.

Growing wind turbines

China is not going to stop there when it comes to the size and power of offshore wind turbines. We know that the China State Shipbuilding Corporation had already built a 18 MW wind turbine last January, and we can expect the next release of a model capable of generating 20 MW.

According to experts, each meter added to the length of the blades of a wind turbine increases the surface from which energy can be collected. We can therefore expect even larger wind turbines in the future.
