festiveParty portals are a thing of the past – but the pictures remain a cult

Every party-goer of the 2000s knows them: the party portals that provided information about parties and published picture galleries full of party-goers. All that is now a thing of the past.

In the 2000s they were present at almost every party: the photographers who took pictures of the guests and then published them on portals such as Usgang.ch or Tillate.ch.

That’s what it’s about

  • On Friday, the last known party portal, Usgang.ch, went offline.

  • In the 2000s, party portals attracted a lot of attention from party people.

  • However, social media has replaced party photography and portals.

  • However, the founder of «IZZO», a new party portal, is of the opinion that a portal for upcoming parties is still desired.

What was common in the 2000s has lost its importance today: browsing through party pictures on well-known websites such as Tillate.ch, Partyguide.ch or Usgang.ch.

The first two cult portals have not been online for a long time. Usgang.ch has also not been available on the Internet since Friday. The website says: “Usgang.ch has closed the doors until further notice.”

Definite shutdown not sure yet

For 22 years, the portal provided pictures of partygoers from various clubs in Switzerland. In 2006, Ringier Axel Springer bought Usgang.ch and incorporated it into the Energy Group. On Saturday, Pascal Frei, managing director of Energy, told the “Daily Gazette”that Usgang.ch has not been doing so well for ten years.

Nevertheless: Frei does not want to speak of a definitive shutdown of the portal. “We are now considering whether to relaunch, sell the brand or end Usgang.ch completely and forever,” he told the newspaper.

Gone are the days of party-goers wanting to be photographed by party photographers and scouring the internet for post-weekend party pics.

«Social media has replaced party portals»

Alexander Bücheli, media spokesman for the Zurich Bar & Club Commission, thinks so too. Nevertheless, Bücheli says that bars and clubs have benefited from the portals in the past. «The pictures of the party people, which were published via the portals, met with enormous interest. For the first time, society had an insight into Swiss nightlife – the party pictures were more or less democratized.”

As a result, according to Bücheli, the portals were well visited and the organizers could also benefit, since future parties could be promoted and potential new guests became aware of the parties.

Today, however, the party portals are no longer up to date. The technology, but also the will of the party people have changed. “Mobile phone cameras and social media make the portals superfluous, everyone can open their own party picture portal on Instagram. And the party people are increasingly enjoying being able to celebrate anonymously without photographers taking pictures,” says Bücheli, adding: “More and more clubs are forbidding photography or filming on the premises and are even masking visitors’ cell phone cameras. It shows that nowadays guests are more likely to be looking for anonymity again.»

«There is a demand for an event calendar»

Timon Jecklin regrets that with the closure of Usgang.ch the last party portal has disappeared from the internet. He is of the opinion that such a thing is still desired by party-goers – just without party photos.

That’s exactly why he founded the online party portal “IZZO” together with friends. Since October 2022, party-goers have found an overview of when and where which parties are taking place in German-speaking Switzerland. “A survey we carried out showed that a kind of event calendar compressed onto a website would be popular,” says Jecklin, CEO of “IZZO”.

But not only those who love to celebrate are interested in the portal, organizers, bars and clubs are also pleased with what is on offer. “We often receive inquiries as to whether we can record events on the portal. We are convinced that our offer will continue to be well received by all nightlife fans in the future,” concludes Jecklin.
