The Fatal Risks of Incorrectly Using Electric Toothbrushes: Tips for Optimal Oral Health

2023-06-08 09:30:46

Dentists warn that the millions of people who use electric toothbrushes are putting themselves at “fatal” risk by using them incorrectly.

And new research finds that nearly half (41%) of electric toothbrush users fail to switch heads regularly, making them “less effective”.

Meanwhile, 3% of the 1,000 Britons surveyed said they never change the head of their electric toothbrush.

This survey was conducted because several studies have linked poor oral hygiene to Alzheimer’s disease.

“A worn-out toothbrush cannot clean your teeth properly and may damage your gums. When the bristles become loose, the cleaning is not done properly,” said Chief Dentist Dr Nigel Carter, CEO of the Oral Health Foundation.

According to the survey conducted by sustainable wellness brand SURI, around 30% of respondents could not remember how long it had been since they changed their toothbrush head.

Experts suggest changing the electric toothbrush head every three months to maintain good oral health.

Not brushing your teeth properly can lead to plaque buildup on the teeth which can lead to periodontitis, also known as gum disease.

Previous research suggested that the bacteria known to cause periodontitis – F. nucleatum – may be involved in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer’s disease.

Dr. Davinder Raju, Dentist and Founder of Green Dentistry, added: “Cleaning your teeth and gums is essential to help maintain your beautiful smile and ensure you stay healthy and vibrant for life. Unfortunately, over time, frayed or worn bristles on a toothbrush become less effective at removing plaque. And bacteria from your teeth and gums. Therefore, it is recommended to change toothbrush heads every three months or sooner to ensure overall hygiene.”

Take care of your oral health

Maintaining general oral hygiene will protect you from gum disease, but unfortunately, the older you get, the more susceptible you are to these diseases.

Daily oral hygiene and plaque control can prevent gum disease, but you should also visit your dentist every six months.

For effective oral health care:

– brush your teeth with fluoride toothpaste at least twice a day – spit out after brushing your teeth and do not rinse

Clean between your teeth every day with dental floss

Replace your toothbrush every one to three months

Visit the dentist and dental hygienist for regular check-ups, especially if you are pregnant or have type 2 diabetes.

– stop smoking
