A rally was organized this Monday in support of two students from the François Magendie high school threatened with expulsion. The speeches of their supporters took place in front of the tags made the day before, attributed to the extreme right.

They are so upset that they did not want to speak at the rally of their support this Monday morning. Shenaya and Ana-Maria, two final year students at Magendie high school in Bordeaux, are both threatened with expulsion, despite their integration and good academic results. After the media coverage of their situation in recent days, and two petitions asking that they remain in France, damage was committed this Sunday on one of the walls of their high school, with the tags “Ni Shenaya is an abaya», «France to the French» et «Nationalist direct action».

«These inscriptions are shameful and odious», Judge Loïc Prud’homme, La France Insoumise deputy for Gironde, present this Monday in front of the high school. In recent months, similar tags, attributed to the far right, have been found on parliamentary offices and on association premises, including that of SOS Racisme. For Erwan Nzimenya, president of the Girondin committee of SOS Racisme, these infamous degradations would also be a sign that the high school students supporting their threatened comrades would be “on the right side of history“. Loïc Prud’homme encourages high school students to “never accept the slightest racist or xenophobic remarks» and affirms his desire to go “until regularization» by Shenaya et d’Ana-Maria, «so that they can establish their future in the country».

“They work and they apply themselves”

However, the fight is still far from won. The two young high school students from Magendie are both in a complicated situation. Shenaya is a Sri Lankan who arrived with her parents in 2019, using a tourist visa. Having fled their countryfor political reasons», his parents asked for political asylum but did not obtain it. Ana-Maria is originally from Moldova. She also arrived in France in 2019, with her mother, because she had been diagnosed with cancer and no longer had “only three months to live“. After several operations, she is now cured but wishes “finish the studies started four years ago».

In this regard, the many teachers from Magendie high school present this Monday are unanimous: Shenaya and Ana-Maria are two hardworking and integrated young women. “I admire these students», Explains Marie Gomes, philosophy teacher who has the two high school girls in her class. “They are in progress, they are working and they are applying themselves», specifies the teacher, who would like “only have students like them“. She criticizes the Gironde prefecture for its “violence» in the terms of the obligation to leave French territory (OQTF) addressed to Shenaya. “She is told that she has no ties to France even though she is particularly well integrated».

The petition attached to the appeal against the OQTF

In the petition to suspend this OQTF, which has around 35,000 signatures, Shenaya in fact recalls the grievances with which she is accused. She would be “deprived of any close and stable private or family ties in France» and would not produce “no document establishing its lasting integration into French society“. Statements strongly contested by the young woman and those close to her. Clément Vauchelles, French teacher at Magendie, protests against “this incoherent speech from the prefecture saying that our students are not integrated into the establishment».

«The only criticism made of Shenaya and Ana-Maria is their administrative situation», adds the deputy Loïc Prud’homme, “because they have not committed any crime or misdemeanor“. The Gironde prefecture, however, recalls that “the prefect undertook to re-study the file» from Shenaya, if she filed an appeal. As for Ana-Maria, she is not targeted by an OQTF but has “filed a sick foreigner application and a request for regularization for exceptional admission to stay», at the same time as his mother, state services specify. Their files are “under investigation».

Touched by this outpouring of solidarity but overwhelmed by certain reactions, Shenaya and Ana-Maria did not wish to speak this Monday. “They had planned to talk but they don’t really feel it anymore», Explains Naoki, high school student and activist of the student collective Le Fist Raised. Beyond the dissemination of the petition, the challenge of mobilization is also to show “daily support» to the two young women, insists Clément Vauchelles. “The petition was overwhelmingly signed by high school teachers.“, explains the professor, and will be “attached to the lawyer’s file for Shenaya’s appeal and the re-examination of Ana-Maria’s file“. A response should be provided within two months. “And if there is a need for remobilization in the event of negative results, we will be there», Already announces the teacher.
