The Democratic Party, which pledged to pass the so-called “Special Prosecutor Chae Sang-byeong Act” within the term of the 21st National Assembly, has repeatedly put pressure on the People Power Party.

They are demanding that a plenary session be held on May 2nd and that the ruling and opposition parties reach an agreement, which appears to mean that they will block President Yoon Seok-yeol’s veto in advance by overwhelmingly passing it.

Following Rep. Ahn Cheol-soo, Rep. Kyung-tae Cho also supports the introduction of a special prosecutor, and a change in climate is becoming evident within the People Power Party.

Reporter Shin Jun-myeong covered the story.

″There are now about 50 days left in the 21st National Assembly. During this period, the Special Prosecutor Chae Sang-byeong Act must be passed.″

The ‘Special Prosecutor Chae Sang-byeong Act’, which was submitted to the plenary session of the National Assembly through a fast-track agenda, contains content that reveals the circumstances of the death of a corporal who died during the search for a missing person and suspicions of external pressure from the President’s Office and others on the investigation of the Marine Corps Investigation Team.

The Democratic Party said, “This is the last opportunity given to the Yoon Seok-yeol regime and the People Power Party,” and pressed for the holding of a plenary session on May 2 and “processing of an agreement between the ruling and opposition parties.”

Although the Democratic Party, which has more than a majority of seats in the National Assembly, can pass the bill in the plenary session, it appears to be intended to block President Yoon Seok-yeol’s veto in advance by passing it overwhelmingly.

″The national administration before April 10 and the national administration after will have to be completely different.″

In the People’s Power Party, which has been opposing the special prosecution, a change in atmosphere is becoming clear after the general election, with Representative Ahn Cheol-soo followed by the most elected member, Cho Kyung-tae.

″Our party must make efforts to resolve public suspicions before the Democratic Party… ″

Lee Jun-seok, leader of the New Reform Party, who is joining the 22nd National Assembly, also added, “The People Power Party must show a forward-looking attitude.”

″(The People Power Party leadership) must demand a very forward-looking attitude from Yongsan on issues such as the Chae Sang-byeong case… ″

In addition, the Democratic Party has decided to push for the re-enactment of the Itaewon Disaster Special Act next month.

The Itaewon Special Act, which passed the National Assembly last January, is back in the National Assembly due to President Yoon’s veto.

However, since a bill that has been vetoed by the President requires the approval of more than two-thirds of the members present, it is difficult to re-pass it if the People Power Party members do not cooperate.
