The Sudanese feature film “Goodbye Julia,” directed by Mohamed Kordofani and producer Amjad Abu Al-Ala, continues to reap successes and acclaim during its global screening tour, as the London Film Festival announced that the film will premiere in the United Kingdom during the festival, in its 67th edition (October 4 – 15). Pointing out that tickets for the film screenings were sold out a month before the screening took place.
On the other hand, the film received 7 nominations at the Septimus International Awards, which are held in the Dutch capital, Amsterdam. The nominations are: Best African Film, Best Director, Best Screenplay, and two nominations for Best African Actress (Iman Youssef and Seran Riak), Best Cinematography and Best Soundtrack.
The film had its world premiere at the Cannes International Film Festival in the Un Certain Regard competition, where it won the Freedom Prize. It also participated in the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival and the Melbourne International Film Festival.
Since its launch at the Cannes Film Festival, the international media has covered it with praise. Fabien Lemercier wrote on the Synorpa website, “The director explores the conflicts in his country through an intimate women’s story.” The French website AFP described the film as a “daring show,” while Howaida Hamdi said of the film, “A poem.” Quiet, her verses attempt to dismantle chronic complexes and a history of intolerance and racism.
“Goodbye, Julia” is produced by the famous Sudanese director Amjad Abu Al-Alaa, who represented Sudan in the Oscar nominations for best foreign film in 2020 for the first time in history with the film You Will Die at Twenty. It is also co-produced by Mohamed Al-Omda through the Sudanese production company Station Films, and MAD Solutions is in charge of it. International sales of the film.
