But it is clear that Jadeja, who has returned after the break, has further enhanced his performance. Earlier, Rohit Sharma had said that he had a plan to take Jadeja to the forefront of batting. Underlying this is Jadeja’s performance in the Twenty20 series and now in Tests.
Easy batting
Jadeja scored 175 in the first innings. The Sri Lankan bowlers could not subdue the star. Sri Lanka had a relatively inexperienced bowling line-up. But they managed to surprise and knock down even Rohit and Kohli.
But when it came to Jadeja, the bowlers were never able to challenge. The runs were born out of Jadeja’s bat as effortlessly as the river. 17 fours and three sixes were included in the innings. Jadeja was not ready to give in to Lahiru Kumara’s speed or Lakmal’s excellence.
It is not enough to judge a player’s performance as a batsman. Batter, Jadeja, showed responsibility for leading the team. Rishabh Pant, Ravichandran Ashwin and Mohammad Shami teamed up to complete the century. In all three, Jadeja’s dominance was evident.
When the spin magic is repeated
For years, the cricketing world has recognized Jadeja’s bowling prowess on Indian soil. Strong batsmen from teams like Australia, South Africa, New Zealand and England have also fallen victim to Jadeja. The performance against Sri Lanka was its sequel.
Sri Lanka lost 16 wickets on the third day. Jadeja scored eight of them. Nine batsmen were bowled out in two innings. He scored over 150 runs and took five wickets in an innings. Jadeja’s performance is unique in that something like this is happening on the cricket field five decades later.
The field of fortune
Jadeja said after the match that the ground in Mohali had given him luck. “I was trying to form an alliance with the Rishabh ball. The ball was given a chance and enjoyed from the other side. I am happy to be able to score runs and take wickets for the team, ”Jadeja said.
“Such a performance will definitely boost a player’s confidence. I did nothing more. I used my potential. It took time to establish. I want to keep everything simple, ”Jadeja said of the innings.
