The first Apple 5G chips will still be long overdue

After the takeover of the 5G branch of Intel by Apple in 2019, the arrival of a 5G chip created by Apple was imminent. Four years later, there is still nothing.

The 5G modem designed and developed by Apple has been talked about for many years. Already in 2019, Apple bought the 5G branch of Intel with the aim of creating its own chip. We were telling you about it then, the Cupertino firm had given its employees a deadline: 2022.

We are in 2023 and it is clear that the deadlines are far from being respected. Barring a (huge) surprise during the keynote, Apple would still be working on its own chip, in order to gain autonomy vis-à-vis Qualcomm, on which it still depends a lot for many components of its products.

Never mind, Ming-Chi Kuo announces it, the 5G chip made in Apple would be well and truly on track. A date is even announced, 2025, three years behind the schedule that Apple would have initially given to its workforce. The objective would finally be to integrate all the network needs of the iPhone into this chip: 5G, WiFi and Bluetooth.

Currently, Apple develops all its SoC chips internally, the 5G chip is the logical continuation of this logistical independence. This would also reduce costs on its components, since Apple will no longer have to outsource.
