“The future of Korean semiconductors has disappeared”… A statement calling for a re-discussion of the K-Chips Act by a former private member of the Special Committee on Semiconductors

Amidst criticism that the ‘Special Act on Semiconductors (K-Chips Act)’ to support the domestic semiconductor industry is in fact half a bill, private members of the People’s Power Semiconductor Industry Competitiveness Enhancement Special Committee (hereinafter referred to as the Semiconductor Special Committee) urged a re-discussion. A statement was issued on the 26th.

As four major academic societies related to semiconductor technology joined the statement, the voice of criticism toward the K-Chips Act is growing.

In a statement, they said, “The semiconductor industry has recently been reorganizing its manufacturing supply chain for security reasons, and the US, European, and Japanese governments, as well as Chinese and Taiwanese governments, are strengthening support for private companies to protect and nurture their own semiconductor industry.” It is difficult for Korean private companies to survive in competition with foreign companies without active government support,” he explained.

“The facility investment tax credit of 8%, which was confirmed under the recently revised Restriction of Special Taxation Act, is far short of those of competing countries such as the 25% in the United States, which inevitably seriously undermines the international competitiveness of Korean semiconductor companies.” We strongly request a wise re-discussion by the government and political circles by cutting off the issue.”

In the statement, KAIST professors Kim Jeong-ho and Park In-cheol, who are private members of the People’s Power Semiconductor Special Committee, Seoul National University professors Jeong Deok-gyun and Hwang Chul-seong, Sungkyunkwan University professor Kim Yong-seok, Samsung Display advisor Park Dong-gun, and Korea Semiconductor Industry Association executive director Ahn Ki-hyun, all participated.

In addition, semiconductor-related societies such as Seo Seung-woo, president of the Korean Society of Electronics Engineers, Kang Kang-yoon, president of the Korean Society of Microelectronics and Packaging, Park Jae-geun, president of the Korea Semiconductor Display Technology Society, and Lee Yun-sik, president of the Semiconductor Engineering Society, also joined the statement.
