the government puts an end to social leasing, a victim of its success

Lhe social leasing only lasted six weeks. Launched on 1is January 2024, this system appealed to the French, so much so that 50,000 orders for electric cars were placed in one month, double what was planned for the whole year. There is therefore no longer enough money to finance the measure, which will end, according to The echoes.

In just one month, more than 90,000 requests were registered and 50,000 of them were validated. Initially, it was planned to make 20,000 to 25,000 leasing orders in 2024 and double that in 2025. The State, which had planned 300 million euros of investment for this year, will therefore double the bill and put an end to social leasing, due to lack of resources. In fact, each car rental costs him 13,000 euros. READ ALSO The automobile under social leasing has already filled up

“Accelerate the pace” of French producers

Another factor of failure, according to the government, is also the insufficient capacity of French producers to produce vehicles made in France. Only cars built in France or Europe are eligible. On Sunday, the Minister of Industry and Energy, Roland Lescure, urged them to “accelerate the pace”.

According to a source cited by The echoes, a decree stating the end of the measure will be published “in the very next few days”, specifies the same source. The text should appear in the Official Journal on Tuesday. If you have placed an order, don’t worry, all those that have been validated will be taken into account.

Social leasing allows you to benefit from an electric car for less than 100 euros per month for city dwellers and 150 euros for family cars. The system is reserved for French people whose reference tax income is less than 15,400 euros, who drive more than 8,000 km per year or live more than 15 km from their place of work. Without an initial contribution, the rental of the vehicle is planned for three years, renewable once.
