The Guardian Exclusive: UN Expert Calls Israel’s Actions in Gaza a Case of Genocide

In an exclusive interview with the newspaper The GuardianMr. Fakhri said that“There is no reason to prevent the passage of humanitarian aid, or to deliberately destroy small fishing boats, greenhouses and orchards in Gaza other than to deliberately deny people access to food” .

“It is clear that deliberately depriving people of food is a war crime. Israel has announced its intention to destroy the Palestinian people, in whole or in part, simply because they are Palestinian,” he added.

As a human rights expert at the United Nations, he said the current situation is a “case of genocide”, which means that“Israel as a whole is guilty and must be held accountable, not just individuals, this government or that person. »

Regarding malnutrition and starvation among children, Mr. Fakhri, who is also a law professor at the University of Oregon, said that “The speed of malnutrition among young children is also astonishing, as the bombings and direct killings of people are brutal. But this starvation and the thinness and stunted growth of children, is a tortuous and contemptible thing. This will have a long-term impact on the population physically, cognitively and morally, and all indications are that this is intentional.” Likewise, he stressed that intentionally starving civilians by “Depriving them of things essential to their survival, including by intentionally obstructing the supply of relief supplies, is a war crime, according to the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court.” THE “essential things” include food, water and shelter, which Israel systematically deprives Palestinians of.

What should be noted, Mr. Fakhri told the Guardian, is that’“Israel is not only targeting civilians, but is trying to destroy the future of the Palestinian people by harming their children.” To his eyes, “Ending funding to UNRWA almost immediately, based on baseless allegations against a small number of people, serves no purpose other than to collectively punish all Palestinians in multiple countries. The countries that removed this lifeline are undoubtedly complicit in this (desire to) starve the Palestinians.”

The UN Special Rapporteur on the right to food concluded that “ Israel will claim there are exceptions to war crimes. But there is no exception to genocide, and there is no debate about why Israel would destroy civilian infrastructure, the food system and aid workers, and allow this degree of malnutrition and hunger… L “The accusation of genocide holds an entire country responsible, and the solution to genocide is a matter of self-determination for the Palestinian people.”
