Stress, an ailment that affects everyone and seems to accelerate our aging process and bring us closer to death more quickly.

On May 2, 2023, the scientific journal specializing in metabolic biology research, Cell Metabolism, published a study on the harmful effects of stress.

The authors of this study examined the impact of stress on biological age, which corresponds to the age of our organism according to its state of health, compared to chronological age. “Chronological age represents the number of years of life, biological age is defined by the degree of alteration of your DNA by a chemical reaction”, explained the specialists.

They subjected mice to prolonged social stress and observed an increase in their biological age. However, when the mice were left to rest for an equivalent period, their biological age was restored.

Daily stress can therefore cause us to lose up to 30 years of life expectancy, according to the authors of the review. Factors that increase this stress can be major surgery, pregnancy or even a serious infection, for example.

According to the Lescuyer laboratory, nearly 9 out of 10 French people are affected by stress, and more than 200,000 new diseases caused by stress are declared in France each year. Moreover, according to the National Institute for Research and Security, stress would have a social cost estimated between 2 and 3 billion euros in France.

The specialists also analyzed blood samples from patients with chronic stress and found that their biological age was higher than their chronological age. “Stress is one of the leading causes of illness and death worldwide, and is associated with a variety of physical and mental disorders”, which is why after a period of stress, rest is needed to allow our biological age to catch up with our chronological age.
