“The horror, 43 dogs detained in an unoccupied dwelling in Estaimpuis”: the SPA denounces “mistreatment”, the authorities intervene

“The horror: 43 dogs detained in a house, some in cages, others in the dark”, denounced SPA Mouscron on its Facebook page last Friday. Volunteers from the association indicated having found “a corpse” in a “foul” odorin a house located in Estaimpuis (in the province of Hainaut).

The authorities and the police, notably arrested by the SPA, went to the scene to assess this challenging situation. The association had also denounced “l’inaction” from the authorities.

We had to intervene at all costs

Saturday afternoon, a solution was found to take care of the animals and provide them with the necessary care.

“An observation was made by the police and the animal welfare manager in the town. I contacted the owner who was hospitalized and seriously ill, so that she agreed to voluntarily abandon her animals in order to collect them. and make sure they get better”explains the mayor of Estaimpuis Daniel Senesael.

He pursues: “She had put people in charge of looking after the animals, but perhaps there was not a proper follow-up to ensure that the animals were in dignified conditions. We had to intervene at all costs .”

Daniel Senesael also confirms that the problematic situation had been known to the authorities for some time (SPA Mouscron shared photos dating from 2021 on social networks). “There was a follow-up carried out by the animal welfare unit of the Public Service of Wallonia, which is responsible and guarantor in this matter. Each time, I had reports which mentioned that the state was not exceptional but that it was acceptable. With the reports in my possession, the file was not the subject of a particular follow-up, even if Veeweyde followed it with attention. His intervention therefore took place this weekend. end”, he concludes.

About forty canines were finally taken care of by the Royal Society for the Protection of Animals Veeweyde, which will take care of the various treatments.
