THE CITY of Jakarta holds millions of stories, and South Jakarta is no exception. Living, working, hanging out and creating there, apparently inspired the multitalented musician Farrell Hilal to put it into a song which is ready to become his debut single under the Sony Music Entertainment Indonesia label, Di Selatan Jakarta.
Not only does he act as composer of the song, the man who was born in Jakarta, November 27 2000, also acts directly as a producer.
For Farrell, there is no special reason for choosing this song as his introduction to music lovers, he just feels that this song is the most relatable and relevant to listeners.
“I like riding with my partner, so that’s where the inspiration for this song came from. I wanted to capture the habits of Jakartans who like to ride vehicles to get around the city, whether private or public vehicles. Why South Jakarta? Because my whole life is here and I want to show that life in South Jakarta is exciting and varied. “Here, we can fall in love, wander around at dusk, or visit iconic places, even though all of this is sometimes accompanied by air pollution or eye pollution,” he said.
Farrell has apparently been writing this song since 2022. From writing the song to making the demo (including taking vocals) it only took two days.
After being selected as his debut single in 2024, this fan of the RnB and Soul music genres took vocals again with the Sony Music team.

“When re-recording with SMEI, I not only sang the finished song, but also slightly modified some of the notes and tones and added instruments with the aim of giving the impression of a climax to this song,” said Farrell
Farrell admitted that In South Jakarta presented its own challenges for him to sing because of the change in genre that was outside his comfort zone.
“I feel this song has a very strong pop music feel, quite out of my recent habit of singing RnB and Soul more often. “With different treatments, the challenge is how to make this song comfortable for me to sing and pleasant to listen to,” he said.

However, this fan of the late Glenn Fredly, Matthew Sayersz, and Teddy Adhitya is grateful that he received help from the Sony Music team in working on this debut single.
“I’m happy because I always get full support in working on the single Di Selatan Jakarta so that whatever difficulties I face can be overcome,” he said.
With the release of Di Selatan Jakarta, Farrell wants people who listen to feel connected to the song.

“Apart from that, I want to invite those who live, work or like to play in South Jakarta to accept whatever situation exists. This city may not be perfect, but it will still feel like a comfortable home and welcome anyone who comes with open arms. “Hopefully this song can give people outside Jakarta an idea that this is what South Jakarta is like,” he stressed.
This Justin Bieber fan also expressed his hopes for a musical career in the future.
“Joining the Sony Music Entertainment Indonesia label is a great opportunity and I am happy because it was well received by my friends at SMEI. “Hopefully by joining SMEI, my musical career can develop even further and have a good impact through the various works I create,” concluded Farrell.
