Liver problems damage the brain

Hepatologist Ashwin Dhanda reported on the impact of liver disease on mental abilities, writes HuffPost. Problems with this organ can damage the brain, causing cognitive decline.

Sometimes doctors mistakenly attribute the consequences of liver disease to symptoms of dementia. According to the hepatologist, cirrhosis can occur without symptoms until the liver begins to fail.

“The liver can be damaged due to several factors, including alcohol, fat deposits and hepatitis viruses. When the damage is not treated, the liver becomes scarred and at some point stops performing one of its most important tasks – purifying the blood,” Dhanda said.

Toxins, including ammonia, begin to accumulate in the blood. They enter the brain and disrupt its functioning. According to the doctor, about 10 percent of patients with liver problems are misdiagnosed with dementia.

“Correct diagnosis can change the lives of patients, since brain damage due to liver diseases is reversible,” the doctor concluded.

We previously reported that the doctor named the main enemy of the heart – it is not on the plate.
