The impact of the ongoing violence in Sudan threatens to derail bilateral political progress with neighboring South Sudan, aggravate the fragile humanitarian situation and pose new risks, senior UN officials were quoted as saying on Tuesday. African Press Agency (APA).

“The outbreak of violence in Sudan could seriously jeopardize the chances of political progress in Abyei and border issues,” warned Martha Ama Akyaa Pobee, Under-Secretary General for Africa in the Department of Political Affairs and Consolidation of Peace. Peace and the Department of Peacekeeping Operations.

Speaking before the security council, Pobee recalled that security in Abyei, a disputed oil-rich border region straddling the two African countries, has been a point of contention, but agreements were reached before the outbreak of violence in Sudan on April 15, reports the APA.

Among the most pressing concerns are disruptions caused by the conflict to the deployment routes of the Council-mandated United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA), established in 2011 to implement bilateral border agreements, indicates the same source.

“While fighting continues and mediation efforts are underway, the United Nations will continue to support Sudan and South Sudan when dialogue on Abyei resumes,” Pobee assured.

“The arrival of additional personnel and equipment will have to be postponed, which could affect the capacity of the force,” she noted, adding that planning is currently underway to make alternative arrangements that minimize the delay while safeguarding the safety of personnel and equipment.

Hanna Serwaa Tetteh, Special Envoy of the Secretary-General for the Horn of Africa, told the Council that the conflict jeopardizes the stable relations that existed before the conflict between Juba, the capital of South Sudan, and Khartoum, reports again. l(APA.

“The humanitarian, security, economic and political consequences of developments in Sudan have raised concern among political leaders in Southern Sudan,” she continued.

Thousands of South Sudanese hosted in Sudan are returning, with a potential 200,000 more fleeing the violence “if we don’t see stability return soon”, she warned. This would be a challenge for South Sudan, two-thirds of whose population is in need of humanitarian assistance.
