According to the Centers for Disease Control, CDC, fentanyl is currently the leading cause of death among Americans in the 18-45 age group. It is a highly addictive substance and generates large profit margins for those involved in manufacturing and marketing it.

But what surprised public opinion is that in less than a day the machine is already empty. Inside there was not only Narcan, also contained crack pipes, condoms, tampons, nicotine gum, first aid kits, sanitary pads, vitamin C, and covid-19 tests.

The machine was installed on Monday, June 5, in Brownsville, Brooklyn, and activated at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 6.leaving with minimal resources in a few minutes.

The only requirement for any citizen to obtain the resources provided by the machine is to enter the correct zip code.

Why is Narcan so important for those suffering from drug addiction?

The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved that naloxone, or better known as Narcan in its nasal spray version, it is sold freely in all commercial establishments in the country.

Until now, the nasal spray version was sold by prescription or at local health centers. However, this decision by the FDA changes the landscape and the rules of the game, allowing it to be acquired by any citizen.

FDA Commissioner Robert Cliff called the move “an urgent public health need.”

This nasal spray, licensed in the United States since 2015, has become the must-have weapon against the country’s overdose death crisis, as it works quickly by sending molecules called naloxone to the brain, which displace opioid molecules from receptor sites to reverse an overdose.

“We need to destigmatize and normalize naloxone use,” especially among young people, Scott Hadland, a pediatric addiction specialist, said before the vote.

“People were concerned that young people were having more intimate relationships and that’s not how people think. And it’s not like people who have opioid use disorder would think,” she noted.

The over-the-counter sale of Narcan would allow it to be distributed through vending machines. In Washington, for example, organizations hope to install three, which would give discreet and anonymous access to the antidote, at any time of the day and night.
