she spoke British newspaper “The Independent”.Coal use rose worldwide last year, despite global promises to cut it.

According to the newspaper, a report found that the burning of coal for electricity, cement, steel and other uses increased in 2022, despite global promises to gradually reduce fuel, which is the largest source of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.

Coal use grew by 19.5 gigawatts last year, enough to power about 15 million homes, according to a report by the Global Energy Monitor, an organization that tracks a variety of energy projects around the world.

The report said that this increase of 1% comes at a time when the world needs to reduce coal use 4.5 times faster to achieve climate goals.

In 2021, countries around the world have promised to phase out coal use to help meet the target of limiting warming to 1.5°C (2.7°F).

It is noteworthy that the website of the International Energy Agency published a report, earlier, that expects global coal consumption figures to record new high levels, in light of the energy crisis.

According to the study, entitled “Coal 2022”, global coal consumption increased last year by 1.2%, compared to 2021, while growth in the European Union reached 6.5%.

Coal consumption in the European Union countries reached 449 million tons in 2021, and rose to 478 million tons in 2022, with the increased demand for coal used to generate electricity.

The total production of coal in the European Union countries also increased from 332 million tons in 2021 to 357 million tons in 2022, or by 7.3%.

The coal and mining industries have recently gained momentum in some European countries, seeking to take various measures against the energy crisis. There is also an increase in production in European coal mines, and some countries, notably the United Kingdom and Poland, have prepared projects for new coal mines.
