Juan Branco, the Franco-Spanish lawyer mandated by the leader of Pastef, Ousmane Sonko, seems determined to continue his approach to bring the State of Senegal and its highest officials before the International Criminal Court (ICC).

This action by Juan Branco follows the violent demonstrations that broke out in early June in Dakar and in several regions of the country, causing 16 deaths, injuries and significant material damage. In preparation for his press conference scheduled for Thursday morning in Paris, the adviser to the mayor of Ziguinchor claims to have gathered no less than “4500 pieces of evidence” concerning “112 suspects” Senegalese.

At a press conference last week, the Senegalese government, through Minister Sidiki Ka, called the young French lawyer’s initiative “bragging”. In another letter made public on June 18, the former President and Honorary President of the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) also stressed that only States Parties, the ICC Prosecutor authorized by the pre-trial chamber after an independent and impartial investigation, as well as the competent UN Security Council under the agreement with the ICC, are empowered to seize this jurisdiction.
