(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Han Seong-gan = Research results have shown that personality may be related to dementia.

This fact was found as a result of a comprehensive analysis of eight research papers on the relationship between personality and dementia among a total of 44,531 people (ages 49 to 81) conducted by a research team led by Professor Emory Beck of the University of California, Davis. It was revealed, Medical Express reported on the 2nd.

Of these, 1,703 people were diagnosed with dementia.

The research team analyzed whether the five personality traits classified as ▲conscientiousness ▲extroversion ▲openness ▲instability ▲acceptability and the degree of subjective well-being were related to the clinical symptoms of dementia.

As a result, people with strong negative traits such as instability and weak positive traits such as conscientiousness and extroversion had a high dementia diagnosis rate.

On the other hand, people with high levels of openness, acceptance, and life satisfaction had a low dementia diagnosis rate.

The research team also analyzed whether other variables such as age, gender, and education level affected the relationship between personality and dementia, but found that there was no effect other than that conscientiousness increases with age.

The research team explained that personality appears to be linked to dementia because of related behaviors.

For example, the research team pointed out that conscientious people are more likely to eat well and take care of their health, and thus can maintain good health in the long term.

The results of this study were published in the latest issue of ‘Alzheimer’s & Dementia’, the journal of the American Alzheimer’s Disease Association.
