The Link Between Sitting and Uterine Fibroids: What You Need to Know

Many health experts say that sitting is equivalent to smoking in terms of its impact on health, as numerous studies have found the serious impact of our sedentary lifestyles.

A new study on women’s health revealed that women who spend more than six hours a day sitting have a doubled risk of developing uterine fibroids.

The more sitting time, the greater the risk of developing uterine fibroids, according to the study, which found that sitting for six or more hours per day was associated with double the risk compared to women who sat less than two hours per day.

One possible explanation is that a sedentary lifestyle is associated with obesity, a known risk factor for fibroids. The study authors also point out a known relationship between sedentary behavior, chronic inflammation, and vitamin D deficiency, which may also explain the increased risk of fibroids.

Fibroids are harmless growths of muscle and tissue that form inside or on the wall of the uterus, according to the Cleveland Clinic. They are fairly common. Up to 80% of women suffer from fibroids, especially among those between the ages of 30 and 50. .

Small fibroids are usually painless, but larger ones can cause pain, swelling, excessive bleeding, constipation, and discharge.

Previous studies have found that sedentary lifestyles are linked to endometrial, ovarian and breast cancer, all fueled by estrogen. So health experts wanted to know whether fibroids, which are also fueled by estrogen, might also be linked to sitting.

Researchers from Kunming University in China collected more than 6,600 women between the ages of 30 and 55 who had not yet gone through menopause to conduct the study.

They then collected basic information including menstrual and reproductive history, number of children, and diet.

Participants in the study, published today in the journal BMJ Open, also detailed the amount of time they spent playing board games, screen time, reading, knitting and other sedentary activities.

The participants were then divided into four groups according to the number of sitting hours: less than two hours per day, two to four hours per day (a group that includes 61% of women), four to six hours per day, and six or more hours per day.

Overall, 562 (8.5%) of the women had fibroids, and rates were higher among women over 50 years of age.

Many other studies have linked sitting to health effects, as researchers from the University of Southern California and the University of Arizona found that those who sit 10 hours or more a day may be more susceptible to dementia.

In addition, a recent study published in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine found an association between prolonged sitting and the risk of premature death from any cause.

A sedentary life has also been linked to cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, anxiety, depression, and deep vein thrombosis (DVT).

But there are simple ways to compensate for the damage caused by sitting, according to experts, as it was found that only five minutes of light walking every half hour to compensate for the risks resulting from sitting, according to a study published in the Journal of the American College of Sports Medicine.

Just 22 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity has the potential to reduce the risk of adverse health effects from sitting.
