If you think that viral diseases, epidemics, wars, accidents, and bad habits such as smoking are the main causes of death, then you are wrong, according to recent scientific studies.
The strangest reason to join the risk list is loneliness.
According to a senior US health official, the “loneliness epidemic”, which has spread recently, is as dangerous for a person as smoking 15 cigarettes a day.
According to the BBC, the surgeon general, Vivek Murthy, has called for social isolation to be taken as seriously as problems such as obesity or drug abuse.
He cautioned that he believes nearly half of Americans have been affected by loneliness at some point in their lives.
According to the report, loneliness increases the risk of premature death by almost 30%, through health problems such as diabetes, heart attacks, insomnia and dementia.
Loneliness and isolation also negatively affect academic achievement and poor work performance.
Murthy called for a collective effort to “repair the social fabric” and restore communication between human beings.
