The Minister of Agriculture explains Morocco’s plan to guarantee Eid al-Adha sacrifices at reasonable prices

The Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, Rural Development, Water and Forests, Muhammad Seddiqi, reported today, Monday, April 29, 2024, in the House of Representatives, that the number of sheep and goats prepared for slaughter during Eid al-Adha amounts to 3 million heads, which were numbered starting March 8, 2024.

Al-Siddiqi said, in his response to two oral questions that were united by the unity of the topic about “providing Eid sacrifices,” that there is a program to prepare for Eid Al-Adha that was launched in November 2023, and includes a number of procedures, including an accurate assessment of the expectations of supply and demand for sacrifices in coordination with professionals, and registering units. Raising and fattening sheep and goats for Eid, which amounted to 214 thousand units.

Regarding the health aspect, the Minister highlighted that the herd’s current health status is good, and that several measures have been taken related to “health tracking and monitoring, protecting the herd from infectious diseases, monitoring feed and veterinary medicines used, and monitoring livestock supply water.” And monitoring the transportation of poultry waste by issuing a prior license and granting a pass.”

Among the measures taken in preparation for Eid al-Adha, according to the minister, is “creating and equipping 34 temporary markets for Eid sacrifices at the national level to strengthen existing markets, and opening imports on an exceptional and temporary basis, to increase the supply of sheep heads destined for Eid al-Adha and contribute to preserving the national herd and reducing the cost of imports.” And price stability.”

The government official mentioned the measures related to import, which are reflected in “granting support for the import of sheep destined for slaughter within the limit of 500 dirhams per head, starting from March 15, 2024 until June 15, 2024, and exempting the import of sheep from customs duties and value-added tax.”
