The Minister of Home Affairs, Acting Regional Head who Participated in the Regional Elections, Must Resign – 2024-03-29 02:31:01

THE MINISTER of Home Affairs (Mendagri) Tito Karnavian emphasized that acting regional heads must resign from their positions if they want to take part in the regional head elections (pilkada) which will be held on November 27 2024.

“The acting regional head must step down five months before the regional elections are held if he wants to take part in the regional elections,” stressed Tito in a coordination meeting on Thursday (28/3) as reported by Between.

The coordination meeting via video conference was held with acting regional heads throughout Indonesia, including the Acting Regent of Tanam Paser Utara Makmur Marbun in East Kalimantan Province.

The acting regional head was appointed by the central government to fill the vacancy in regional leadership, explained the Minister of Home Affairs, not using the position for practical politics.

“All acting regional heads must act neutrally in the implementation of regional elections,” he stressed.

The neutrality of acting regional heads in regional elections is regulated by Law Number 10 of 2016 concerning the second amendment to Law Number 1 of 2014 concerning the election of Governors, Regents and Mayors, becoming a Law which was enacted on July 1 2016.

In article 7 paragraph (2) letter q, candidates for governor and deputy governor, candidates for regent and deputy regent, as well as candidates for mayor and deputy mayor must meet the requirements.

These requirements are stated in paragraph (1). according to the Minister of Home Affairs, he must fulfill the following requirements, letter q: not have the status of acting governor, acting regent and acting mayor.

The provisions in this regulation, he continued, are to prevent the acting governor, acting regent and acting mayor from resigning to nominate to become governor, deputy governor, regent, deputy regent, mayor or deputy mayor.

The working meeting was held by the Ministry of Home Affairs (Kemendagri) to optimize the performance of the acting governor, acting regent and acting mayor, regarding strategic issues relating to the implementation of regional elections, as well as the governance of regional government administration.
