The moment the earthquake in New York interrupted a session of the UN Security Council

A magnitude 4.8 earthquake shook the states of New York and New Jersey this Friday, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The agency reported a tremor with a preliminary magnitude of 4.8, with the epicenter near Lebanon, New Jersey, about 75 kilometers west of New York.

At the time the earthquake shook the earth, a session of the United Nations Security Council was taking place. Janti Soeripto, president and executive director of the NGO Save the Children, spoke about the crisis in Gaza.

“There is no sanitation whatsoever. The community I visited had one bathroom for 69 people. Women line up for three hours to wear it. Schools, normally a place of protection for children, are a place where they cannot normally have humanitarian services. Education is, in various ways….president, can I continue?,” she asks as the shaking takes place.

And he continues: “Education is, in many ways, life-saving but not in Gaza, where every child is out of school and 80% of the schools have been destroyed.”

The earthquake was felt when Janti Soeripto intervened

The tremor, which lasted several seconds, could be felt throughout the Big Apple, from Brooklyn to the Bronx or Manhattan. New York Governor Kathy Hochul noted in X that the earthquake “shook western Manhattan and has been felt throughout New York.”

“My team is assessing the impacts and any damage that may have occurred, and we will update the public throughout the day,” Hochul added.

The New York City Fire Department told EFE that, so far, no “major incidents” have been recorded, and that authorities continue to “monitor” the city.

For its part, the New York Mayor’s team indicated in X that at the moment they do not have any impact report and that they are evaluating the situation.

On this social network, many residents of New York and New Jersey indicated that they had felt the tremor for a few seconds, to such an extent that the earthquake label is among the X trends.

The X account of the legendary Empire State Building skyscraper, as a joke, posted the following message: “I AM FINE.”
