The new iMac would arrive in 2024, directly with the most powerful chip

Initially expected this year with an M2 processor on board, the new version of the 24-inch iMac would finally arrive next year, thus moving directly from its current M1 processor to the future, more powerful M3 chip.

Ultimately, Apple would indeed skip a generation of “M” processor with its 24-inch iMac. Initially expected in 2023, with an M2 chip on board, the new version of the machine would ultimately not arrive before 2024, and would therefore leave aside the M2 chip to move directly to a new generation M3 SoC. In any case, this is what Ming-Chi Kuo and Mark Gurman suggest, contrasting with old rumors which were becoming difficult to believe.

In detail, it is Ming-Chi Kuo who plans a launch somewhere in 2024, while Mark Gurman, journalist for Bloomberg, has already been talking about the adoption of an M3 processor by the iMac for several months. A chip that we would also find quite quickly on the new version of the 13 and 15 inch MacBook Air (among others), also expected in the coming months. As a reminder, the current 24-inch iMac still uses a simple M1 chip, launched in 2020.

The 24-inch iMac in 2024, and directly under M3 processor?

As pointed out for his part WCCFTechby moving directly to the M3 chip, the next iMac would therefore put an end to a generation of SoC to directly adopt the best that Apple will offer in 2024. This would be logical, and would also allow Apple to offer this iMac solid performance: on the device, the M3 chip should indeed develop its full potential without being hampered by the issue of energy saving intrinsic to MacBooks.

Remember that this future M3 chip should be engraved in 3 nm by TSMC (compared to 5 nm for the M1 processor), the same process as that used for the A17 Pro chips of the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max. As usual, this increased engraving finesse should allow for better performance and reduced energy consumption. It is also rumored that the M3 chip would offer much better graphics performance. A sector in which Apple has invested a lot with the A17 Pro, notably with support for ray tracing and the promise of compatible AAA games.

It now remains to be seen when, in 2024, this new 24-inch iMac could materialize. For the moment, we do not yet know its launch window, but the device could be announced at the same time as other Macs, somewhere between spring and next summer. We should know more in the coming months.
