The new sirens will inform 75 percent. residents near Astrav, says the PAGD commander

It is planned that about 500 more such sirens will be installed in a couple of years.

“From this Norwegian financing, 197 sirens and their management have been purchased, (…) after the implementation of this project, a section of 100 kilometers from Astrav will be covered, because at that time when planning the project and coordinating the scope of purchases, there was no war risk as such, because the preparation of the project, the implementation takes quite a long time”, Saulius Greičius, head of the Fire Protection and Rescue Department (PAGD), told reporters on Monday.

One such siren was demonstrated at the Vilnius Clinical Hospital on Monday. According to S. Greičius, modern sirens not only emit a warning signal, but also allow broadcasting of spoken text.

According to the PAGD commander, taking into account the new geopolitical challenges, it is necessary to purchase at least 500 more sirens, which would be placed throughout Lithuania, in order to increase the reach not only due to the danger of the Atsravas nuclear power plant, but also other geopolitical threats.

According to the Minister of the Interior, Agnes Bilotaitė, the mentioned 500 sirens will be installed in Lithuania within the next two years as part of another Norwegian project. The total value of the projects will reach about 10 million. euros.

According to A. Bilotaitė, the network of sirens available in Lithuania is “currently quite bad”, as approximately one thousand sirens allow to warn about 57-58 percent. of the country’s population. With the installation of sirens financed by the Norwegian Foundation, the network will be expanded.

“This will make it possible to achieve better awareness among the population, and after the project is completed, we should have about 1,141 sirens in Lithuania. The goal is to achieve that 75 percent the entire population of Lithuania would hear that the situation is complicated, a weather hazard or another situation, and they would be able to react appropriately,” A. Bilotaitė told journalists on Monday.

According to her, the network of sirens in Lithuania is still not bad, compared to Estonia or Latvia, where the network consists of 200 sirens.

According to the minister, centralization of the siren network is also planned among the works. It is currently decentralized.

“This means that each siren can be connected individually or each municipality organizes the activation of sirens according to the mechanisms and algorithms they have. We are working towards having a centralized one, which means that the Fire Protection and Rescue Department could centrally press a button in the event of an air hazard or other situation, and sirens would be activated either in the whole of Lithuania or in a specific place”, said A. Bilotaitė.

In addition to sirens, warnings are also sent in other ways – text messages, which reach about 90 percent. population. According to A. Bilotaitė, a mobile application is currently being developed, which would allow to effectively warn residents about possible dangers.
