The city of Brussels is mobilizing for the protection of its old elevators, remarkable for their impressive architecture. The Belgian capital has launched an inventory.

AT Brussels, Belgium) , some 100-year-old elevators are so beautiful that they are visited once a year. “First effect is ‘wow’ (…) Look at the attention to detail, nothing but the small molding at the entrance (…) Even the ceiling is perforated with stained glass windows“, marvels the guide, in front of very receptive visitors. The Brussels region, which has embarked on a census of similar lifts, already counts more than 800.

The groups of visitors are under the spell. “We travel in history. We enter an elevator and we change the period, we change the century by just opening a door. It’s quite formidable“, rejoices one of them. Belgian law requires the renovation of these 100-year-old lifts, which no longer meet current safety standards, and are threatened with disappearance. The owners are struggling to find service providers in the height of these exceptional machines.
