Amid the recent controversy over a case in which Mr. A (in his 20s) hit the head of Mr. B (in his 60s) indiscriminately with a smartphone on the subway, the victim’s family filed a national petition asking for strong punishment for the perpetrator.

On the 19th, on the bulletin board of the Cheong Wa Dae National Petition, an article with the title ‘Please, please punish the woman who assaulted Subway Line 9 and give them a full punishment’ was posted.

The petitioner, who identified himself as the victim’s cousin, urged public attention and harsh punishment for the perpetrator, saying, “I am filing this petition because I could not contain my anger after hearing the details of the incident from my brother.”

According to the petitioner, B witnessed a spitting on the floor of a train near Gayang Station on the way to work on Subway Line 9 at around 9 pm on the 16th. When Mr. B, who was surprised, pointed out, “What do you do when you spit like this?”, Mr. A poured out abusive language. The petitioner’s claim is that at the moment B was about to call the police, A started kicking and hitting B’s head with his smartphone.

At the time, if you look at the video of the incident that was shared through the social networking service (SNS), you can hear blood dripping from Mr. B’s head, and the sound of Mr. A shouting, “I have a police back.” Person A was said to have committed this act while intoxicated and was outraged when Mr. B grabbed his bag and prevented him from getting off the train.

The petitioner emphasized, “Because it’s absolutely a woman, because it’s mentally and physically weak, it’s a two-way assault that doesn’t even look like a two-sided assault, so there should be no narrow-minded punishment.”

Earlier, the Gangseo Police Station in Seoul booked A on charges of special injury. This is because the smartphone that A used to beat B was recognized as a dangerous object. If convicted under the Criminal Code, a person can be sentenced to between 1 and 10 years in prison for simple injuries and between 2 and 20 years in prison for serious injuries.
