the Orléans hospital launches an appeal for donations of breast milk

The lactarium of the Orléans regional hospital center is calling for donations of breast milk, estimating that its stocks should be three times greater.

The regional hospital center of Orléans, in Loiret, is launching an appeal for donations of breast milk, he informed Le Parisien and confirmed to BFMTV.com. Its lactarium, its center for collecting, analyzing, processing and distributing human milk, welcomes “fewer and fewer donors”, laments Farida Dahri-Mobarek, health executive within the structure.

Breast milk is “extremely beneficial for the health and development of the most vulnerable newborns”, but sometimes, the mothers of these babies do not produce milk, or not enough, explains the association of lactariums of France on its site. In premature babies, breast milk “supports the development of the digestive tract” and “the body’s defense against infections,” according to the same source.

“It thus helps to prevent certain specific and potentially serious complications linked to prematurity (infections, ulcerative-necrotizing enterocolitis, retinopathy),” adds the association. Today, human milk has additional benefits compared to artificial milk for low birth weight children, according to the High Authority of Health. This is why milk donations are very important for these infants: “they really save lives,” says Farida Dahri-Mobarek.

Need three times more donations

But since 2021, the stocks of the Orléans lactarium have been “much less full” than before, observes Farida Dahri-Mobarek. “Organ and blood donations have more visibility” and lactariums have “a hard time making milk donation known,” she believes.

“Moms don’t know that they can donate, they are not aware,” adds this childcare health executive.

Farida Dahri-Mobarek estimates that the lactarium would need to see its reserves triple. “And if we had more, we could supply other lactariums,” she explains.

How to make a donation?

Women who have a surplus of breast milk can express it and freeze it while waiting for it to be collected by a lactarium. To donate it, you must contact a lactarium which will detail the procedure for the donor, send the appropriate equipment (sterile bottles or breast pump if necessary) and will send professionals to collect the milk from the donor’s home. Contraindications to donation can be seen here.
