The police force is getting thinner and thinner

Chronicle

There is a shortage of skilled workers not only in Vorarlberg’s economy and industry. The police are also increasingly having a problem with the lack of officers. The staffing level at the Vorarlberg police is getting thinner and thinner. In hardly any other federal state have so many officers turned their backs on the police.

The police are increasingly having a problem with the lack of officers. This emerges from the most recent inquiry by Interior Minister Gerhard Karner to the Social Democrats. It is particularly striking that in Vorarlberg many officers are giving up their job as a police officer.

40 fewer police officers than regular positions

In the current year alone, 21 police officers have already retired – including three police trainees. Compared to the entire workforce, this is the highest value in Austria. In addition, there are ten retirements this year, which will further reduce the number of employees.

The response to the query shows that there are 921 police officers, 40 fewer than the planned posts. With some working part-time or temporarily off duty, the police are currently short of staff for 124 full-time jobs.

The district police command in Bludenz is the best, and the one in Bregenz is the worst. The shortage of staff is also reflected in the overtime hours: there were more than 64,000 in the first half of the year.
