It is undeniably one of the most beautiful treasures of Occitania. A symbol of Roman engineering, the Pont du Gard is today one of the most visited monuments in the region.

Built in the 1st century, it is the highest Roman aqueduct bridge in the world. It measures 49 meters high and weighs 50,000 tonnes ! It is made up of three rows of superimposed arches (six arches on the first level, 11 arches on the second level and 47 arches originally). It is also the major element of an aqueduct of 50.02 km.

Nearly a thousand men worked on this colossal project, completed in just five years.

An exceptional selection

For this top 50, the Routard has obviously made an exceptional selection. When we leave the borders of France, we find in particular the Tower Bridge (London), the Brandenburg Gate (Berlin), the Pisa tower (Italy), the Coliseum (Rome), the pyramids and the Sphinx of Giza (Egypt), the Taj Mahal (India), the Palais royal de Bangkok (Thailand), the Imperial City (Vietnam), la Great Wall of Chinathe Statue of Liberty (New York), the pont du Golden Gate (San Francisco) or the Machu Picchu (Peru).

Suffice it to say that the Pont du Gard occupies a lovely place in the middle of all these exceptional monuments, scattered across the four corners of the world.
