The Pope warns of the “gangrenes” of intolerance in a mass with Milei

Vatican City, Feb 11 (EFE).- Pope Francis warned today of the “leprosy of the soul” or the “insensitivity to compassion” and of “the gangrene of intolerance”, during the canonization of the first Argentine saint, before the president of that country, Javier Milei.

Today in St. Peter’s Basilica, Francis presided over the canonization of the consecrated laywoman María Antonia de San José de Paz y Figueroa, known as “Mama Antula,” and in his homily he recalled the passage in which Jesus of Nazareth touched and healed a leper, who represents the marginalized and most vulnerable in society in today’s world.

“Let us not think that they are just things of the past. How many suffering people we find on the sidewalks of our cities! And how many fears, prejudices and inconsistencies, even among those who believe and profess to be Christians, contribute to hurting them even more! Also in our time there is so much marginalization, there are barriers to break down, ‘leproses’ to heal,” he said.

In this sense, the Argentine pontiff called to “touch” those people who suffer and not to “reduce the world into – he said – the precincts of our ‘being well’.”

“In these cases let us be careful, because the diagnosis is clear: it is ‘leprosy of the soul’; a disease that makes us insensitive to love, to compassion, that destroys us through the ‘gangrenes’ of selfishness, prejudice , indifference and intolerance,” he warned.

The pope recommended following Jesus “touching and healing” those wounds but without “grandiose and spectacular ways” but with “the hidden charity of each day,” which “lives in the family, at work, in the parish, at school.” , on the street, in offices or in businesses”.

“That charity that does not seek publicity and has no need for applause,” he noted.

Francis delivered this homily after proclaiming the first saint of Argentina, “Mama Antula” (1730-1799), who is recognized for her arduous spiritual and social work in those lands that were then part of Spain and where she founded the Holy House of Spiritual Exercises, currently a historical monument of the country.

The canonization mass was attended by the Argentine president, Javier Milei, who during the campaign called the pope “the representative of evil on earth”, among other things, although after his arrival at the Casa Rosada he has lowered his tone.

This morning a brief and formal greeting between the two was planned in the Vatican sacristy, while tomorrow they will hold a private audience in the Apostolic Palace.

In his homily, the Argentine pontiff praised the figure of the new saint who was in charge of keeping alive the legacy of the Jesuits – the order of Bergoglio – in territories that today correspond to Argentina (its independence occurred in 1816) after her expulsion in the middle of the 18th century by order of King Charles III.

“When the Jesuits were expelled the Spirit lit in her a missionary flame based on trust in providence and perseverance,” he said.

She also highlighted that it was she who introduced the devotion and the first images of Saint Cayetano of Thiene to Argentina.

“Thanks to ‘Mama Antula’ this holy intercessor of Divine Providence made his way into homes, neighborhoods, transportation, businesses, factories and into the heart to offer a dignified life through work, justice and daily bread,” term.
