Having a purpose in life protects the functionality of the brain, even when faced with stress and trauma. This means that highly motivated people have better cognitive functions in middle age, they are less likely to experience Alzheimer’s disease.

These conclusions were reached by scientists from the University of Barcelona during a study involving 624 people, whose average age was 53 years, writes Neuroscience News.

Volunteers were divided into groups according to indicators of having a goal and high motivation in life. They then compared their cognitive abilities and scanned their brains.

It turned out that in purposeful people certain nodes of the network of passive brain work were better connected, and this is what can positively affect cognitive performance.
